We are glad to announce our participation to UNTITLED San Francisco (BOOTH C9) with a solo show dedicated to Franklin Evans.
“Faces Fractals and Feeds” presents a new group of paintings and works on paper, which draw from the breadth of image data populating the contemporary space of artistic practice. Art history frames, establishes the architectural supports, and is the subject of Evans’ maximalist paintings and painting installations. The more is more ethos of the images he pulls into his work reflects his documentation of direct experience of other artworks and his consumption of art documented and presented by others through Instagram art image feeds. These images are printed and populate his studio simulating the conceptual surround, synaptic space of a brain. This process produces paintings of density and repetition, reflecting both the studio and the brain space from which the work emerges. Faces and their repetition at various scales, in correspondence with the fractal, dominate this group of work. Canonical images from Matisse’s “Piano Lesson” and “Sleep” to Mesoamerican masks and reliefs, among many others, collide in a visual space that stacks, references perspective and expands cosmologically, all while accepting their material flatness on a stretched canvas.
